What this recipe converter does
This is a recipe scaler and recipe multiplier in one page. Paste an ingredient list, tell it the recipe makes and what you need, and it recalculates every line — doubling a recipe, halving a recipe, or scaling a family recipe to a crowd is one click. Exactly the same kind of math as a recipe converter calculator: amount × (needed ÷ makes).
The tool also works as a plain convert recipe measurements page: you can convert cups to tablespoons to teaspoons to millilitres, and grams to ounces to pounds, without touching the servings fields.
Supported units
- Volume (US): cup, tablespoon (tbsp), teaspoon (tsp), fluid ounce (fl oz), millilitre (ml)
- Weight: gram (g), kilogram (kg), ounce (oz), pound (lb)
- Counts: amounts with no unit (3 eggs, 2 apples) are scaled as numbers.
Conversions within each group are exact (1 cup = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp = 8 fl oz = 236.6 ml; 1 lb = 16 oz = 453.6 g). Converting grams ↔ cups needs an ingredient density, because it depends on what you are weighing:
| Ingredient | Grams per 1 US cup |
|---|---|
| Water / milk | 240 |
| All-purpose flour | 120 |
| Granulated sugar | 200 |
| Brown sugar (packed) | 220 |
| Butter | 227 |
| Olive oil | 216 |
| Honey | 340 |
| Rolled oats | 90 |
| Uncooked white rice | 200 |
| Table salt | 290 |
These are standard US kitchen reference values. In the quick unit converter you can type your own grams-per-cup number, so you are never stuck with a wrong figure for an unusual ingredient.
How it works
One line, one ingredient. Lines that start with one or two numbers — 200 g flour or 1 1/2 cups sugar or 1.5 tsp salt — are detected and scaled. Lines with no amount (like “salt to taste”) are kept as-is so nothing in your recipe is lost.
Common questions
How do I scale a recipe to a specific number of servings?
Set “Makes” to the recipe's current serving count and “Need” to your target, then press Convert. Every amount is multiplied by Need ÷ Makes.
How do I double or halve a recipe?
Set Makes to 4 and Need to 8 to double it, or Makes 4 → Need 2 to halve it. The multiplier shown above the button tells you what is being applied.
Can this convert cups to grams?
Only when the ingredient is in the density table above, or when you type its grams-per-cup value in the quick unit converter. Without a density, cups and grams are different dimensions and cannot be converted honestly.
Does my recipe leave this computer?
No. Everything is calculated in the browser on this page; nothing is uploaded or stored.
